my achy-breaky
joints
Harley
here to let you know how some of my
friends have that achy-breaky pain.
Arthritis is a common problem with
dogs and particularly as they age.
As their caretaker, you are the one
that needs to be observant for
changes that can indicate a problem.
Common signs to watch for are: a
decrease interest in walking,
running or playing: difficulty
climbing stairs or standing up from
a lying down position: inability to
get in the car without assistance:
stiffness, limping or a change in
the way they walk: or expressions of
pain when attempting to move.
The first thing you need to do is
have your veterinarian perform a
through exam. Like with humans,
there are many options available to
help manage the discomfort.
NSAIDS including Rimadyl, Previcox,
Metacam, EtoGesic, Dramaxx and
Zubrin can be prescribed by your
veterinarian. NSAIDS can have
serious side effects so make sure
and read the insert provided by your
veterinarian. If your canine does
not tolerate one of the NSAIDS, you
can always try another to find the
right one that works.
Adequan, an injectable medication,
is another option that can be
effective either on its own or in
combination with other medication.
AZGRC has used Adequan on several of
our dogs with very good results.
The dietary supplement, glucosamine,
can always be helpful for dogs with
arthritis. In fact in larger breed
dogs, like Golden Retrievers, it is
recommended to start them on
glucosamine at a young age before
they develop arthritis.
If you are looking for other
alternatives, acupuncture and
therapeutic massage may provide some
pain relief and an increase in
mobility. There are some great books
available that instruct you and
provide pictures on how to do
therapeutic massage. Plus your pal
will enjoy the quality time with
you.
Love,
Harley
