Sheriff Harley here with another member of my
“Top Ten Most Unwanted”! Here is another
potential criminal that can only be avoided by
prevention. This criminal is a spore that
strikes randomly and not even humans are
immune. It is hard to watch out for spores
because they are so small even my highly trained
eagle eyes cannot see them. Best bet is to stay
indoors on windy days and avoid construction
areas.
valley fever
AKA:
Coccidiomycosis, a fungal spore
found in the Arizona dirt. Primary infection
affects the lungs and can become disseminated
form which spreads to bones, joints, brain and
other organs.

In the warm arid climates of the
deserts of the Southwestern United States.
Danger:
Can cause fever, listlessness,
cough, weight loss, limping, abscess and
seizures.
Treatment:
A
blood test is needed to confirm the disease.
Long term treatment with anti-fungals and follow
up blood tests are needed.
Prevention:
Reduce pet’s exposure to desert
soil and dust from wind. Avoid busy construction
sites.
