goldens corner

teddy's tidbit

Hi All, Teddy here.

Well, it has been a while since I had the privilege of writing a Goldens Corner article.  But we need to give others a chance to showcase their skills and, I must say, we have some very talented Goldens in the group!  So I need to stretch my paws, work out the kinks, and, hopefully, measure up to the caliber of articles that my Golden colleagues have written.

As you know, the Easter holiday is near and I thought it would be a good time to remind everyone of the potential dangers to us furry family members this time of year.  The following are a few key items to remember:

  • Some plants—the popular Easter lily—are highly toxic to pets and can easily be fatal if eaten.

  • Basket decor, including plastic grass, is another danger if ingested. The plastic grass can become twisted within our intestines and can be fatal if not caught quickly enough. The only solution is often expensive surgery.

  • Keep candy out of our reach; candy can be harmful to pets and chocolate is toxic to cats, dogs, and ferrets.

Trust me… STAY AWAY FROM THE CHOCOLATE!!  One evening I was counter surfing and I ate some peanut butter cups, candy bars with peanuts, (and anything else that smelled good in the bowl) behind mom’s back at Halloween (ok… I ate most of the bowl – mom was very upset with me) and BOY did I regret that!!!  I never felt so sick in my life.  Mom made me as comfortable as possible and made sure I was ok… BUT I WAS LUCKY!!!  Sigh… I don’t surf anymore...

I digress… one last reminder, please avoid impulse buys of bunnies, chicks, ducks or any new pet during the holiday or any holiday for that matter.  Bringing any pet into your home should be done only after carefully assessing your family's ability to meet the animal's needs and only if you have carefully considered your family's lifestyle and your commitment to an animal who can live for many years.

I told mom that we don’t need to worry about that with our members because they are well educated but she said I should put it in there anyway.  She said that new people read the information on our website everyday and some people may not know that giving pets as gifts is not good practice.

Teddy, signing off for now… Happy Spring!!
